Something Serious: Serius Jones made a name for himself bullying fellow emcees in battles all across the world. A label deal would come and go, but his fire to be the best would never go out.

By Mehka

Serius Jones is eating right now. It sounds like he’s munching on a sub and he’s not about to put it down. Its almost like a metaphor for his life in rap. Ever since his first battle, he’s been hungry to be the best emcee, period!

After headlining DVD magazines and blowing up in the internet with his classic battles, Disturbing the Peace stepped to Serius with a record deal in hand. But after the ink dried, it was apparent that the combination of the southern juggernaut with the NYC upstart would not work and a separation was in the works.

Today, Serius is a free agent and he couldn’t be happier. With his life in his own hands again, he’s prepping a new movie and a new album.

In between bites, Serius Jones rapped to Officiallastwordonline.com about his relationship with DTP, his new music and whether or not he’s still battling on the corners.

Officiallastwordonline.com: Tell us in your words. Are you still signed to DTP? What’s good with that?

Serius Jones: Hell to the not! (laughs) It’s a Luda label. I don’t need a label that’s not one hundred percent committed to making me a superstar. It was a good idea, but it didn’t pan out the way we all thought it would. They had a lot on their plate and I would like to think that I’m full course meal. Not that I’m a meal, cause I can’t be ate” (always in freestyle mode) I’m a lot to deal with personally as an artists. I reached legendary status in the form of the streets. There’s not really that much to take me and put me over the top. But whatever it was, it wasn’t being done. I believe in results. No one cares if I’m not performing.

Officiallastwordonline.com: So are you an independent? Are you still looking for a major deal?

Serius Jones: I’m doing both. The one thing about me, I’ve been an international name before I got a deal because of rap city, BET, MTV, the battles and the people who believed in me before I signed a deal. I’ve always been independent even though I wasn’t independent. You can’t wait, you have to keep it moving. I’m not going to wait for a label. I’m entertaining a few label deals, I got a couple of projects that are about to blast off.

Officiallastwordonline.com: Do you ever look at the freestyle reputation that you built for yourself as a hinderance?

Serius Jones: Hell No! Know one would know of me if it wasn’t for that. Who would I be? How would they of heard of me if I wasn’t spazzing on niggas and going to dudes neighborhoods and shutting down they blocks, having people jumping around and laughing off my punch lines off being a socalled punch line rapper. I’d be some guy you never heard of, I’d try to introduce myself and you’d be like, “Who are you”

People don’t want to sit and listen to an album. Everything got to be ready made and microwaved. It has to have a dance with it and a catchy jingle. I’m not with the gimmick part of the game. Its gotta be classic. The battles you saw, they were outrageous. I’ll never bore you. In terms of music, the movie I just did, everything has to be over the top.

Officiallastwordonline.com: So what are you working on right now?

Serius Jones: I got the “Serius Business” its going to be released late summer. Kwame, Shofire music group, Malay, I’m going to have a video for almost every song. It’s amazing that I got such awareness for what I’m producing. The film is called “Life is Serius” the trailer is on worldstarhip-hop.com and I got the best of that’s I’m shopping right now, freestyles, battles. “Life is Serius” the album I;m just waiting for the right situation cause I want to have the right push The debut has to be a big deal. In the mean time, I’m just banging the name back up and the buzz back up and meet these Djs and making the connects

Officiallastwordonline.com: Are we gonna see you going back to the hood to battle again?

Serius Jones: That’s out of the question, what more can I accomplish. They already know me, whatever hood I go to . What can I do, get more of their respect. They know I’m nice, now they want to see who I am as I person. The movie does that, the music does that. Its no he’s just a battler, its no, he’s crazy and he got something to say. Its about who you are and the gimmick. If I was a blood or joined a gang like a lot of these little rap bloods, I’d be on a lot of songs because now we got this little fake connection cause we got this little gimmick. But I’m a real dude so that means I have to do things the hard way and I’m not selling out fast for 15 minutes.
